Layered navigation, but not quite

Posted on July 27th, 2011 | Posted by admin

Recently I got a chance to rewrite Magento’s layered navigation standard functionality. The request was very specific as the client wanted to keep all of the “filters” visible all the time. For example if  you wish to filter your results by Color (let’s say you have yellow, green, red, blue and magenta) products are filtered but the layered navigation displays all filters. This way a costumer can re-filter the products in current category without the need to return to the category view.

Files that are used for layered navigation are situated in app/design/frontend/base/default/template/catalog/layer/ folder. File used for layered navigation is view.phtml – it shows us all of the filters when we click on a category. File used for active state is state.phtml – when we click on one of the filters it is responsible for the results – so we’re gonna edit this one. So copy the state.phtml from base to your package or theme.

This is the original code in state.phtml:

Since Magento has built in functionality for currency, this article will be pretty much straightforward. I’ll explain how to do it step by step. So you might say it’s a tutorial for beginners.

Now, perhaps you’ve noticed that in Magento’s Administration under “System->Configuration” menu, you have “Currency Setup” tab. There You should select default site currency, and besides that, all currencies you wish to support.

Here’s a screenshot of how it looks:After that you should go to menu item under “System->Manage Currency Rates”. And set rates between values you’ve chosen before.

eBay Owns 49% Of Magento Inc – Confirmed

Posted on July 27th, 2011 | Posted by admin

In March 2010 Magento announced that they have received sizable investment but kept the investor name secret. On Thursday eBay has revealed that they own 49% stake in Magento. Now, it’s officially confirmed that eBay owns 49% of Magento Inc.

You might think that what does eBay have to do with Magento but the fact is eBay knows that normal retailers in the coming years will not only sell on eBay but use their own ecommerce versions i.e. Magento. eBay has cemented it’s place by owning Magento which is prominent ecommerce platform.

EBay Inc. chief technology officer Mark Carges said that the investment helps eBay position itself as a resource for e-retailers, whether they conduct business on or elsewhere. “Combined with the power of our platform innovations, we can offer retailers an unmatched advantage as an e-commerce partner,” Carges said. “We view our platform assets as enablers, not just for our business but for other retailers.”

How To Enable Disable Installed Magento Extensions

magento themes club

Magento Extensions are great for enhancing the features of any Magento powered ecommerce stores. Typically these extensions covers those parts of e-commerce which aren’t there in default Magento core. Magento is complete in itself but there are various options which are missing from the core i.e. AJAX cart, Product on Sale, Custom newsletters, Blog, extra fee, Featured product sliders and so on. There is a huge list of features which are required by various Magento powered stores. Unfortunately, not all extensions can be a part of the Magento core otherwise Magento will end up like Oscommerce (a powerhouse where all you needed was a generator). Having too many features will eventually confuse the end users so it’s vital for any open source to keep the configuration aspects optimized.
