Insert dynamical menu in Magento’s Admin

Posted on July 21st, 2011 | Posted by admin

Hello everyone! I’ve recently got frustrated with Magento’s core functionality which requires XML definition for Administration menus. And I really wanted to add quick website / store links to it. Solution was to overwrite one of Magento’s Adminhtml blocks, and inject my non-XML, dynamic menu to it. If you’re interested in how I did it, read on.

To make it upgradeable, and painless, I’ve decided to make an extension just for this. It consists of only 2 Files, config.xml, and one Block rewrite.

First, I’ve created config.xml, and set it like this:

How to override Magento admin view (template) files, quick and dirty way

Suppose you are working on a extension that needs to either change some stuff or implement new stuff in the one of the Magento admin areas. For example, imagine a “Images” tab on the product edit section. If you were in a position where you need to do certain modifications on “Images” tab then you would most likely need to modify the app/design/adminhtml/default/default/template/catalog/product/helper/gallery.phtml file to do so. One of Inchoo coworkers and a good friend of mine, Ivan Weiler, made a Admin Magento theme module that enables you to achieve similar functionality for admin template files as you have for frontend template files.

However, sometimes you wont wish your extensions depend on the additional module for certain functionality. Stuff like “overriding” the admin view files can easily be achieved with just a few minor modifications of extended class.

Locked Out from Magento admin?

Here’s the situation, you, client, webmaster, pet or whoever was playing with users and roles in your favorite store and deleted only main admin account or broke admin account privileges. If it happened to you and you’re locked out from your Magento store, read on.

This script creates new admin user associated to new Inchoo role with all privileges set. Of course, you have to have FTP access for this to work.

Download newadmin script, unpack it, open newadmin.php file (notepad will do) and define username, email and password of the new user. Username and email must be UNIQUE in Magento, so use some new ones and not the old ones that are already in the system, you’ll change it later after you login.
Connect with FTP and copy newadmin.php file to root of your store and run it through web browser like

The script will try to delete itself after user is created, but please make sure it’s removed from the server. Code is tested on 1.3.x versions of Magento and I don’t believe it will work on older versions, so please write some feedback.
