How To Pre Populate Product Dropdown Attribute Values

If you are looking to pre-populate product drop down attributes (custom types) i.e. “Partners” attribute etc. then you must be wondering how to pre-populate the product drop down attribute values in that attribute. One option is to manually enter all the data which is time consuming specially if you are supposed to fill large data set. What if the source of the data is large enough to enter and update? Situation gets worse if you are asked to check whether the data is upto-date or not.

Lets take a scenario where people are coming to a separate part of your website and registering as a partner which is getting stored in other database (Non-Magento database).

Now, we have to fetch partners from this remote site and pre-populate (upto-date) data in our newly created custom attribute dropdown (partners).

Hello everyone, short while after I wrote article Add custom attribute to Magento’s PDF invoice I received quite a number of requests for explanation on how to add products images to PDF invoice. As I had some time, I’ve created an extension that will do just that.

So, this extension is based on old one with custom attribute. It’s tested on Magento Professional 1.9, and will show thumbnails of product images (if those images exist, and Magento can read them) together with products on invoice.

Here’s a screenshot of one of my last tests:

Magento: New Extension Idea – Product Image Removal

As you most likely know, when you remove an image from a product, or delete a product, the image file actually stays in it’s place on the server. It is not removed. Rare is the case when I want the image to remain there if I am removing it from a product, or deleting a product. I would much rather it be deleted!

I’m thinking about writing a module that would allow you to easily enable or disable image deletion in these two cases. So, if you have it enabled, when you remove an image from a product, or delete a product, the image would be fully removed. Simple.

I’d like to try and gauge if Magento users would be interested in such an extension. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please comment and let me know. Feel free to add any additional ideas as well.

If you ever tried to do anything with Magento configurable products view page, most likely you needed changes in  /js/varien/product.js in case you wanted to manipulate dropdowns.

This will be one of the ways to do it.

Basically, what we need to do in order to make initial selection of a product is the following:

Open this file: /app/design/frontend/default/your_theme/template/catalog/product/view/type/options/configurable.phtml
